After Cloud finds himself, go to the basement at the Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim once again. Go to the library and you'll enter into a flashback to a secret cinema that explains how Cloud ended up in Midgar with Zack's sword and how he decided to become a mercenary.

This is optional of course but it is a good watch.
